Djassi’s first birth as a doula was 22 years ago and she began developing a plant medicine -based herbal practice over 15 years ago after living in Italy and being influenced by the access to local farm goods, seasonal and natural cuisine led by a “food as medicine” based culture. After 9 years as a doula and breastfeeding avocate, accessing more natural approaches for her clients, Djassi birthed her daughter and became more passionate in expanding her studies inspired by the natureopath & homeopathic remedies. Upon returning to the states in 2011, Djassi became an avid grounding/ earthing enthusiast which deepened her study of herbs (with an Indigenous focus) and interest in recovering ancestral knowledge and technologies through the land she resides on (Lenape). While fortifying her practice of connecting with the earth daily, she reawakened a lifelong curiosity and connection with fungi. She recalls the fungi ‘speaking” to her as she lay in the earth of Prospect Park and was led to Reishi, her “gateway mushroom” which helped her cure insomnia during a contentious divorce and familial loss and grief.
Djassi has always loved mushrooms and began studying the relationship between climate preservation and the fungal world which led to her deep dive into the world of mycelium. Mycelium (as a collection of hyphae) are the aspects that connect all organisms and help regenerate life from death, eliminate toxicity in a way that humans cannot even fathom- and maintain the balance in our ecosystem. Djassi’s philosophy is rooted in how mycelium sets a precedent for the ways in which we can evolve our human relationships in order to adapt to life on a toxic planet and a damaged world. As a brown woman of mixed and indigenous descent she recognized the affinity of mycelium and Blackness… both holding melanin as a crucial component, while creating and regenerating life in toxic and oppressive environments.
Djassi developed a movement technique (first, for mothers, now for everyone) around the intelligence and function of mycelium, called Mycelium Movement --rooted in Qi Gong, Kemetic yoga and “pelvic girdle enlivenment” dance. Her herbal and mushroom blends for her apothecary include medicinal mushroom blends, herbal teas, tonics, sitz & yoni steam blends, spiritual baths and smokable herbal blends.
